Have you ever seen a super stylish, comfy-looking top and thought, “I wish I could make that”? Well, you absolutely can! Today, we’re going to walk through one of the most satisfying and simple sewing projects out there: the boxy cropped top.

This style is everywhere for a reason. It’s breezy, easy to wear, and looks great with jeans, skirts, or shorts. The best part? You don’t need a complicated paper pattern to get started. With just a few simple measurements, you can create a custom-fit top that you’ll be proud to wear.

If you’re looking for a fun weekend project or want to dip your toes into making your own clothes, you’ve come to the right place. In this guide, we’ll show you how to sew a boxy cropped top from start to finish. Let’s get our sewing machines ready and create something wonderful!

Why You’ll Love This Simple Sewing Project

Before we thread our needles, let’s talk about why this DIY boxy top is such a fantastic project, especially for beginners.

First, it’s fast! You can easily complete this top in an afternoon. The simple shapes and straight seams mean you’ll see progress quickly, which is incredibly motivating.

Second, it’s forgiving. The “boxy” fit doesn’t require precise, complex tailoring. This makes it a stress-free way to practice fundamental skills like sewing straight lines, finishing seams, and attaching simple cuffs and bindings.

Finally, it’s a great way to use beautiful fabrics. A simple shape allows the fabric to be the star. A breathable linen, a soft quilting cotton, or a drapey rayon will all work wonderfully and give your top a different look and feel.

What You’ll Need for Your DIY Boxy Top

Gathering your supplies is the first step to success. The good news is you won’t need anything too fancy. Here is a simple breakdown of the materials and tools for this project.

Materials & ToolsDetails & Recommendations
FabricAbout 1 to 1.5 yards of a woven fabric. Linen, quilting cotton, poplin, or chambray are excellent choices for this top.
Matching ThreadChoose an all-purpose polyester thread that matches your fabric color.
Sewing MachineAny standard sewing machine will work perfectly. Make sure you have a fresh needle (an 80/12 Universal is a good start).
Basic Sewing ToolsYou’ll need fabric scissors or a rotary cutter, pins or sewing clips, and a measuring tape.
Iron and Ironing BoardPressing your seams as you go is the secret to a professional-looking finish. Don’t skip this!

Creating Your Boxy Tee Pattern

For this project, we’re skipping the tissue paper patterns and drafting our own simple pieces. This is less intimidating than it sounds! It’s based on a simple diagram that you can adjust to your own measurements for a perfect fit. The original top was made in a size small, but you can easily make it bigger or smaller.

You will need to cut four main types of pieces from your fabric.

Pattern PieceQuantityWhat It Does
Front & Back Body2These are two identical rectangles that form the main body of your top.
Sleeve Cuffs2These simple bands create a clean, finished edge on the armholes.
Bias Binding1This long, thin strip of fabric is used to neatly finish the curved neckline.

To create your pieces, use a favorite t-shirt as a rough guide for the width and length you want. Remember to add your seam allowance (we use 3/8 of an inch or 1 cm here) to all edges!

Now for the fun part! We are going to build our top one seam at a time. Follow these steps for a beautifully finished garment.

Step 1: Sew the Shoulder Seams

First, take your front and back body pieces and place them together with the pretty sides of the fabric (the “right sides”) facing each other. Line up the top edges, which will be your shoulder seams. Pin them in place to keep them from shifting.

Sew along both shoulder seams using a 3/8-inch (or 1 cm) seam allowance. If you have a serger or an overlocker, this is a great time to use it to finish these seams for a tidy look. If not, a simple zigzag stitch along the raw edge will work just as well.

Step 2: Attach the Sleeve Cuffs

Open up your top so the right side is facing up. Now, take one of your sleeve cuff pieces. Fold it in half lengthwise with the wrong sides of the fabric together, and press it with your iron.

Line up the raw edges of this folded cuff with the raw edge of one of the armholes on your top. Pin it all the way around the curve. It might seem a little strange, but this creates a beautiful, clean finish.

Sew the cuff to the armhole, again using a 3/8-inch seam allowance. Finish this seam just like you did the shoulder seams. When you turn it to the right side and press it, you’ll have a perfect sleeve opening. Repeat this entire process for the other armhole.

Step 3: Sew the Side Seams

Your top is starting to take shape! Fold it in half again, with right sides facing together. This time, line up the side seams, from the bottom of your new sleeve cuff all the way down to the hem. Pin everything securely.

Sew both side seams from the cuff to the hem. Press these seams open or to one side to help them lay flat. When you turn your top right-side out, it will look like a real shirt!

Step 4: Finish the Neckline with Bias Binding

A curved neckline needs a special finish, and that’s where bias binding comes in. This is a strip of fabric cut on the diagonal (the bias), which allows it to stretch and lay flat around curves without puckering.

Take your long strip of bias binding and press one of the long edges under by about 1/4 inch. Pin the unfolded edge of the binding to the neckline of your top, with right sides facing. Sew this in place along that first fold.

Next, fold the binding over the raw edge of the neckline to the inside of the shirt. Pin it down neatly. Topstitch very close to the edge of the binding to secure it in place. This creates a durable and professional-looking neckline.

Step 5: Hem the Bottom

We’re on the final step! To hem the top, fold the bottom raw edge up toward the wrong side by 3/8 of an inch and press it with your iron. Then, fold it over one more time by another 3/8 of an inch to completely enclose the raw edge. Pin it in place all the way around.

Sew very close to the top folded edge of the hem. Give the entire top one final, good press with your iron, and you are done!
