Are you running out of clothes that fit your growing baby bump? Finding comfortable, stylish maternity wear doesn’t have to break the bank. A DIY maternity wrap skirt is one of the easiest and most practical sewing projects you can make. Even better, this simple project requires just basic sewing skills and a few rectangular pieces of fabric!

Why Every Pregnant Woman Needs a Wrap Skirt

Pregnancy is a time of constant change. Your body transforms week by week, making it hard to find clothes that fit comfortably throughout your journey. Store-bought maternity clothes can be expensive, especially when you might only wear them for a few months.

A wrap skirt solves these problems beautifully. The design is genius in its simplicity – it’s just rectangles of fabric pleated or gathered at the top with ties that allow you to adjust the fit as your belly grows. The best part? You’ll be able to wear it after pregnancy too, as your body goes back to its pre-baby form.

What Makes This Project Perfect for Beginners

If you’re new to sewing, this project is ideal. There are:

  • No complicated patterns
  • No zippers or buttons to install
  • Only straight seams to sew
  • No special skills required

Even if you’ve never made clothing before, you can complete this project in just a few hours. It’s all about measuring, cutting rectangles, and sewing straight lines.

Materials You’ll Need

Before starting your DIY maternity wrap skirt, gather these supplies:

MaterialAmountNotes
Main fabric2-4 yardsChoose medium to heavy weight for winter, lighter for summer
Matching thread1 spoolMatch to your fabric color
Scissors1 pairSharp fabric scissors work best
Measuring tape1For taking body measurements
Straight pins10-20To hold fabric in place while sewing
Sewing machine1A basic machine will work fine
Iron1For pressing seams

Taking the Right Measurements

A person wearing a cream-colored sweater is sitting at a table, using their hands to sew or inspect a brown plaid fabric. Only the person's torso and hands are visible. There are framed pictures on the wall in the background.

When pregnant, your waist measurement becomes less relevant. Rather, take your measurement around the rib cage, just beneath your bust. This will be your new waist measurement for the skirt.

For this project, you’ll need two main panels (front and back) that are the same size. Based on the source material, each panel should be about 130 cm wide by 80 cm long, but you can adjust these to your height and desired fullness.

Remember, it’s always better to cut your fabric a bit larger than you think you need. It’s easy to cut more off later, but once it’s gone, you can’t put the fabric back!

Cutting Your Fabric

For an easy wrap skirt, start by cutting out:

  • Two main panels (front and back) of identical size
  • Four waistband/tie strips

The two main panels will form the body of your skirt. The waistband strips will be sewn together to create two long bands – one attached to the front panel and one to the back panel.

Cut the front waistband a bit longer than the back one. This creates less bulk when tied, as you won’t have thick fabric bows on both your front and back.

Sewing Your Maternity Wrap Skirt

Step 1: Prepare the Waistbands

Start by joining your waistband strips. For the front waistband, sew all your pieces together to make one long strip. The back waistband should be about half the length of the front one.

With the right sides facing each other, fold each waistband in half along its length. Stitch along the long side and one of the short sides, then flip it right side out. Press flat with an iron. You now have two tubes of fabric with one end open.

Step 2: Create the Pleats

Pleating gives your skirt fullness while reducing bulk at the waist. Unlike gathering, pleats create a more structured look. For a maternity skirt, pleats pointing away from center front provide the most flattering shape and maximum room for your belly.

Create a box pleat at the center of each panel. This special pleat gives extra room exactly where you need it most – at your belly and lower back.

Step 3: Attach the Waistbands

Insert the raw edge of your pleated skirt panel into the open end of your waistband tube. Pin in place, making sure the pleats stay even. Sew across to attach the skirt panel to the waistband.

Repeat for both the front and back panels.

Step 4: Hem the Skirt

Fold the bottom edge of your skirt up twice to create a clean hem. Sew around the entire bottom. You can adjust the length at this stage if needed.

Step 5: Finish the Sides

The beauty of this design is that the sides remain open at the top, allowing for adjustability. Finish the side edges of each panel with a hem to keep them from fraying.

Wearing Your New Maternity Wrap Skirt

Two hands carefully placing a small object, possibly a piece of fabric or a small animal, into a piece of equipment, likely a sewing machine. The machine has various controls and a display screen visible in the background.

To put on your skirt, wrap the front section around your back and pull the ties forward. Next, take the back panel and wrap it across your front, pulling the ties around to the back—or even all the way to the front again.

You can adjust how tight or loose the skirt fits by changing where you tie the waistbands. As your pregnancy advances, just loosen the tie slightly to make room for your expanding belly.

Care and Maintenance

Wash your skirt according to the care instructions for your fabric. Most skirts can be machine washed on gentle cycle and hung to dry or tumble dried on low heat.

Beyond Pregnancy: Getting More Wear

One of the best things about a wrap skirt is that you can keep wearing it after pregnancy. As your body returns to its pre-pregnancy shape, you’ll simply tie the skirt a bit tighter. It’s truly a wardrobe piece that grows with you.

Frequently Asked Questions About Skirt Making and Modifications

How do you make a skirt step by step?

Making a basic skirt is simpler than you might think. Start by taking your measurements – waist and desired length. Cut your fabric according to these measurements, adding seam allowances. Sew the side seams together. Create a casing for the elastic at the waist. Thread your elastic through the casing. Finally, hem the bottom. For beginners, I recommend starting with a gathered skirt design. It’s forgiving and requires basic sewing skills.

How to wear skirts when pregnant?

Comfort is key during pregnancy. Choose skirts with stretchy waistbands that sit below your bump. Empire-waist skirts work well as they provide room for growth. Maxi skirts offer great comfort and style. Layer your skirts with belly bands for extra support. Consider skirts made from soft, breathable fabrics like cotton or jersey. Remember to size up gradually as your bump grows.

What is the easiest type of skirt to make?

The gathered elastic-waist skirt is the easiest to make. It requires minimal pattern work. You’ll only need rectangular pieces of fabric. The elastic waistband is forgiving with fit. There’s no need for zippers or complex closures. This style works well for beginners. It’s also quick to complete – usually under two hours from start to finish.

How to make skirt out of pants?

Converting pants to a skirt is a creative upcycling project. Start by opening the inner leg seams. Lay the pants flat, matching the front and back centers. Cut away excess fabric to create an even hemline. Sew the front and back pieces together. Add a new hem if needed. This works best with wide-leg pants or jeans. The original waistband stays intact, making this an easy transformation.

How to make an elastic waistband?

Creating an elastic waistband is straightforward. Measure your waist and subtract one inch for snug fit. Cut your elastic to this length. Make a fabric casing slightly wider than your elastic. Fold and press the casing edges. Sew the casing to your skirt, leaving a small opening. Thread the elastic through using a safety pin. Overlap elastic ends and sew together. Close the casing opening. Press the waistband flat for a professional finish.

Ready to Make Your Own DIY Maternity Wrap Skirt?

This simple sewing project will give you a comfortable, stylish piece of clothing that adapts to your changing body throughout pregnancy and beyond. The design is forgiving, the sewing is straightforward, and the result is a practical garment you’ll reach for again and again.

Remember, there’s no need for perfection here – no one will measure your pleats with a ruler! The beauty of making your own clothes is that they can be customized exactly to your needs and preferences.

Have you tried making your own maternity clothes? This wrap skirt is the perfect place to start your pregnancy sewing journey. Grab some fabric and start creating a wardrobe that grows with you!
