Step 2: Creating Your Pattern
Here’s where the smart part of our shirt upcycling project begins. Instead of using a paper pattern, we’ll use a shirt that fits you well as a template.
Lay your well-fitting shirt on top of the folded oversized shirt. This becomes your guide for cutting. Line up the shoulders and trace around the shirt, adding about a centimeter (3/8 inch) for seam allowance.
When you reach the waist area, use a straight edge to create a straight line down to the bottom of the shirt. This creates a nice A-line shape that’s flattering on most body types.
Step 3: Cutting the Fabric
With your pattern marked, carefully cut along the lines. When you unfold the fabric, you’ll have your front and back pieces for your dress.
For the sleeves, lay them flat and stack them on top of each other. Use your template shirt again, lining up the cuffs. Trace around the sleeves with the same seam allowance and cut them out.
Place a small mark right at the middle of the shoulder seam on each sleeve. This helps with alignment in the next step.
Step 4: Attaching the Sleeves
This is where those safety pins from earlier help. Line up the sleeve with the safety pin to the side of the shirt where the collar also has a safety pin.
Align the center mark on the sleeve with the shoulder seam. Pin around the armhole. Do the same for the other sleeve.
Sew the sleeves to the armholes following your pins. If you have a serger, finish the seams with it. If not, a zigzag stitch works great to prevent fraying.
Step 5: Sewing the Side Seams
After attaching the sleeves, pin the side seams from the armpit to the hem, and pin along the sleeve down to the cuff. Make sure everything lines up nicely, especially at the armpit and cuff.
Sew all along this line in one continuous seam. Repeat on the other side. Your clothing transformation is almost complete!
Step 6: Making Final Adjustments
Try on your new dress to see how it fits. In my thrifted shirt makeover, I found the A-line was too flared. I reduced the angle of the skirt and took in the side seams about half a centimeter on each side.
These small adjustments made a big difference in how the dress looked and felt. Don’t be afraid to make changes until you’re happy with the fit.
Step 7: Creating a Tie Belt
A tie belt adds shape and style to your DIY shirt dress. Cut strips that are 2 inches wide from any leftover fabric scraps. Sew these strips end to end until you have one long piece.
Fold the long strip in half lengthwise, ensuring the right sides are facing each other. Sew along the edge to create a tube. Flip the tube to the right side, and voilà – you’ve got a perfect tie belt!
