  • Ready to Make Your Own Infinity Dress?

Have you ever wanted one dress that can be worn dozens of ways? The infinity dress is your answer! This amazing garment can transform from casual to formal, day to night, all with a few simple twists. In this DIY infinity dress tutorial, I’ll show you how to make this versatile piece in just 30 minutes using basic sewing skills.

What Is an Infinity Dress?

An infinity dress (also called a convertible dress) features long straps that can be wrapped in countless ways to create different looks. It’s super popular for bridesmaids because one dress style works for different body shapes. Plus, each person can tie it in their own unique way!

The best part? You don’t need complicated patterns or advanced sewing skills to make one yourself.

Materials You’ll Need

Before starting your DIY infinity dress project, gather these supplies:

MaterialAmountNotes
Stretch fabric4 yardsChoose double-sided fabric that drapes well
Ballpoint sewing needle1Essential for sewing stretch fabrics
Sharp scissors1 pairFor clean cutting edges
Pins10-15To hold fabric in place
Measuring tape1For accurate measurements
Sewing machine1Set to stretch stitch

Choosing the Right Fabric

The secret to a perfect infinity dress is the fabric. Seek out fabric that stretches both ways. This allows the straps to wrap comfortably around your body in different ways.

For formal occasions like weddings, pick fabric with a slight shine. For everyday wear, a jersey knit works wonderfully. Make sure your fabric looks good on both sides since they’ll both show when you tie the straps.

I found beautiful spandex fabric at my local fabric district for about $30 for 4 yards. Before buying, hold the fabric against yourself to check how it drapes. The better it flows, the more elegant your finished dress will look.

Step-by-Step Infinity Dress Tutorial

A person’s hands are shown holding and pulling open a hidden pocket on a light pink garment, laid flat on a blue cutting mat with a grid pattern. To the right, a pair of green-handled scissors and a piece of white elastic cord are visible.

Step 1: Prepare Your Fabric

Begin by choosing a spacious, tidy area to work in. This project won’t fit on a standard cutting table, so the floor works best. Fold your fabric so that the length from the corner will be enough for your desired skirt length.

Smooth out any folds or irregular areas in the fabric. This ensures your cuts will be even and your dress will hang properly.

Step 2: Cut the Circle Skirt

For the infinity dress, we’ll create a half-circle skirt. Find your waist measurement and use a circle skirt chart to determine how much to cut from the corner.

Measure from the folded corner and mark this measurement in an arc. Cut along this line to remove the corner. This creates the waist opening of your dress.

Next, decide how long you want your dress to be. Measure this length from the waist opening and mark another arc. Cut along this line to create the bottom edge of your skirt.

Step 3: Create the Infinity Straps

With your remaining fabric, create the straps that make this dress special. Fold the fabric evenly in half, then measure and mark 9 inches from the straight edge all the way across.

Cut along this line to create a 9-inch wide strip. Remove any selvage edges, then cut this strip in half to create two long straps.

Step 4: Sew Everything Together

Place the skirt pieces right sides together. Pin along the open edge and sew it closed using a stretch stitch. This stitch line will serve as the center back of your dress.

To find the center front, fold the skirt in half at the seam and mark the opposite point. Take one long strap and overlap it at the center front by about 2 inches. Place the second strap on top, overlapping it on the other side by 2 inches.

Ensure the straps are aligned evenly, then stitch all the layers together at the waistline. To finish the back, fold the raw edge at the waist and hem it with a stretch stitch.

Styling Your Infinity Dress

The magic of your DIY infinity dress is how many ways you can wear it! Here are a few popular styles:

Halter Style

Loop both straps around your neck and tie them at the back. This creates a gorgeous V-neck front.

One-Shoulder Look

Cross the straps in front, bring one over your shoulder and the other around your back, then tie them together.

Strapless Version

Wrap both straps around your torso and tie them in the back for a strapless look.

Don’t hem the bottom of the skirt or the edges of the straps. Leaving them unhemmed creates a more seamless look when you wrap the straps in different ways. You can twist the straps to make them skinnier or adjust the waistline higher or lower based on your preference.

Pro Tips for Perfect Results

The hands are carefully manipulating the fabric to ensure proper alignment during the sewing process.

The dress should take only about 30 minutes to make from start to finish. That’s faster than ordering takeout!

You don’t need to hem the bottom of the skirt or the edges of the straps. Leaving them unhemmed actually helps create a more seamless look when styling.
