Have you ever seen a chic one-shoulder top and thought, “I wish I could make that”? Well, you absolutely can! These tops look so stylish and complex, but I’m going to let you in on a little secret: they are surprisingly simple to create yourself. You don’t need to be a sewing expert to get a beautiful result.

This guide will walk you through every step, from drawing your pattern to sewing the final stitch. We’ll learn how to make a one-shoulder top using a simple method that’s perfect for beginners. So, grab your favorite stretchy fabric, and let’s get ready to sew a top that will have everyone asking where you bought it!

What You’ll Need for Your DIY One-Shoulder Top

Before we start drafting, let’s gather our tools. The great thing about this project is that you don’t need a lot of fancy equipment. Here are the basics you will want to have on hand.

ItemWhy You Need It
Stretchy FabricAbout 1 yard of knit, jersey, or spandex fabric works best.
Pattern PaperYou can use craft paper, wrapping paper, or even tape newspaper together.
Measuring TapeFor taking accurate body measurements.
Ruler & PencilA clear ruler helps you draw straight lines for your pattern.
Fabric ScissorsA sharp pair of scissors dedicated to cutting fabric is a must!
Pins or ClipsTo hold your fabric pieces together while you sew.
Sewing MachineA basic machine is all you need. A ballpoint needle is recommended for knits.

Step 1: Taking Your Key Measurements

Accurate measurements are the foundation of a great fit. Don’t worry, you only need a few simple ones for this project. Grab your measuring tape and write these down. It’s often easier to have a friend help you with this part.

MeasurementHow to Take It
BustMeasure around the fullest part of your chest.
UnderbustMeasure around your ribcage, right under your bust.
WaistMeasure around the narrowest part of your torso.
Shoulder to BustMeasure from the top of your shoulder down to your nipple line.
Shoulder to WaistMeasure from the top of your shoulder down to your natural waist.
Top LengthMeasure from your shoulder to where you want the top to end.

Step 2: Drafting Your Basic Top Pattern

The drafted paper pattern pieces for a DIY one-shoulder top laid out on a wooden table, with a sewer's hands gesturing to the different components.

Now for the fun part: drafting a one-shoulder top pattern! We’ll start by making a basic front pattern piece, which we will then change into our one-shoulder design.

First, take your pattern paper and fold it in half. All our first marks will be made from this folded edge. Draw a straight line across the top as a starting guide.

From the top line, measure down and mark your key vertical points: your shoulder-to-bust line, your shoulder-to-underbust line, and your final top length. Use your ruler to draw straight lines across the paper at each of these points.

Next, we’ll add the width. On your bust line, measure out from the fold and mark one-quarter (1/4) of your bust measurement. Do the same for your underbust and waist lines, using one-quarter of those measurements.

Now, connect these dots along the side. This will create the side seam of your top. Finally, draw in your armhole. Start at the top edge and draw a gentle curve that connects down to your bust line.

Step 3: Creating the Unique One-Shoulder Design

This is where the magic happens! Go ahead and cut out your folded pattern piece. When you open it up, you will have a full symmetrical front pattern. This is our starting block.

Lay the pattern flat. Decide which shoulder you want to be covered and which will be bare.

On the side that will be bare (the “strapless” side), measure down about 3-4 inches from the center neckline. Make a small mark. This will determine how low the top cuts across your chest.

Now, on that same side, go to the armhole. From the top corner of the shoulder, measure in about one inch along the shoulder line. This will be the edge of your top.

Draw a smooth, slightly curved line that connects your neckline mark to the armhole mark. This new line is your one-shoulder neckline! Also, you can trim the armhole on the shoulder-strap side a little deeper (about a half-inch) for a more comfortable fit.

Go ahead and cut along this new line. You have now successfully drafted a one-shoulder top pattern!

Step 4: Cutting Your Fabric

It’s time to move from paper to fabric. Lay your stretchy fabric out flat. Place your new pattern piece on top and pin it in place.

Carefully cut out one front piece and one back piece using your pattern.

A quick note on stretchy fabric: If your fabric is very stretchy, like the one in the tutorial this was based on, you might not need to add extra room for seams. However, if your fabric only has a little stretch, it’s a good idea to cut about a half-inch outside your pattern lines. This extra fabric is called a seam allowance and gives you room to sew the seams.

Step 5: Sewing Your One-Shoulder Top Together

A model showing the final result of the DIY tutorial, wearing a stylish and perfectly fitted pink ribbed one-shoulder top.

You’re in the home stretch! Let’s assemble your beautiful top.

First, place your front and back pieces together with the right sides of the fabric facing each other. Line up the shoulder strap and pin it. Also, pin the side seam that has the armhole. Leave the other side (the strapless side) open for now.

Sew the shoulder seam and the side seam using a half-inch seam allowance. A zigzag stitch or a stretch stitch on your machine works best for knit fabrics, as it allows the seam to stretch with the fabric.

Next, we need to finish the raw edges. For the neckline and the armhole on the strapless side, simply fold the edge under by a half-inch and stitch it down. This creates a clean, simple hem. Do the same for the bottom hem of the top. Fold the bottom edge up by a half-inch and sew all the way around.
