Would you like to make cute clothes for your little one that give you two looks in one? A reversible children’s romper (also called John Johns or a romper) is the perfect project! This guide will show you how to create an adorable outfit that can be worn on either side. Time to dive into this exciting and hands-on sewing project!

Why Make a Reversible Children’s Romper?

Reversible clothes are amazing for kids. When spills happen (and they will!), you can just flip the outfit and keep going. Plus, you get two cute looks from one piece of clothing. This project is great for beginners who want to try something useful but not too hard.

Materials You’ll Need

Before we start cutting and sewing, let’s gather everything we need:

MaterialsPurpose
Paper for patternTo create your custom-sized pattern
Fabric (two different prints)For both sides of the reversible romper
ScissorsFor cutting fabric and pattern
PinsTo hold fabric in place while sewing
Sewing machineFor sewing the pieces together
ThreadFor stitching everything together
Snaps or snap tapeFor closures at shoulders and bottom
Snap application toolIf using individual snaps
RulerFor measuring and creating pattern
Child’s clothing that fitsTo use as a size guide

Creating Your Pattern

Making your own pattern is easier than you might think! Here’s how:

Find a shirt and shorts or pants that fit your child well. These will be your guide. Pin the shirt at the high waist point – this marks where the top of the romper will sit.

Place your paper on a flat surface. Fold the shirt in half down the front and lay it on the paper. Next, take the pants or shorts, fold them in half, and place them below the shirt. Make sure the waistband of the pants lines up with where you pinned the shirt.

For the length, measure about 5 inches down from the waistband of the pants. This will be the length of your romper shorts. Trace around both pieces carefully, then straighten the edges with a ruler.

Label this piece as your “front pattern.” For the back pattern, do the same thing but use the back of the shirt and pants. Make the back strap about 5 inches longer than the front, and add an extra inch to the back piece for comfort.

Don’t forget to add Unlock 7 Hidden Sewing Gauge Ruler Features for Effortless Precision”>seam allowance all around your pattern pieces! Make sure the curves at the bottom are smooth and even, and check that both pieces are the same height.

Cutting Your Fabric

Here’s where the fun begins – picking out your fabric and cutting it to size! Here’s what to do:

Cut four front pieces and four back pieces of fabric – two of each in both fabric prints. Make sure they’re mirrored so they’ll match up correctly when sewn.

This might seem like a lot of pieces, but remember, we’re making a completely reversible garment, so we need both the inside and outside for each side.

Sewing the Front Pieces

Let’s start with the front pieces:

Take one front piece in each fabric print and place them right sides together (this means the pretty sides of the fabric are touching). Secure the top edge of the front piece with pins.

Sew along this pinned edge. Do the same with the other two front pieces so you have two sewn front pieces.

When you’re done, they should look like the top part of the romper from both fabrics.

Sewing the Back Pieces

Hands stitching fabric with a needle and thread on a wooden surface. One hand is holding the fabric while the other is guiding the needle through the material. The person is wearing a gold watch on their wrist. The fabric includes a checkered pattern and a solid light green section.

For the back pieces:

Just like with the front, take one back piece of each fabric print and place them right sides together. Pin and sew along the top edge.

Repeat with the other two back pieces. Now you should have two sewn front pieces and two sewn back pieces.

Putting It All Together

This is where the magic happens:

Take one sewn front piece and one sewn back piece and place them right sides together. Match up the side seams and pin all around the edges.

Sew around the entire edge, but remember to leave an opening at the bottom of the back piece. This opening will let us turn everything right side out later.

After sewing, clip the curves and corners (being careful not to cut the stitches) to help the garment lay flat when turned.

Now take your sewn piece and turn it right side out through the opening you left. Push out all the corners and edges gently. Pin the opening closed and topstitch along the entire bottom edge to close it nicely.

Also topstitch along the top edge to give it a clean, finished look.

Adding Snaps

Hands guide light green fabric through a sewing machine.

Snaps make this romper easy to put on and take off:

For the shoulder straps, measure about half an inch down from the top of each strap. Mark these spots for your snaps.

Use your snap tool to pierce through the fabric at each mark. Place the smooth side of the snap on the underside, and fix the male or female part on the top side. Clamp them together using your tool.

Make sure you put the matching parts of the snaps on the opposite sides so they’ll connect properly.

For the bottom, you can use individual snaps like you did for the shoulders, or use snap tape for an easier option. Cut the snap tape to size (about 4 snaps long), pin one side to the bottom edge of one side of the romper, and sew it in place. Next, pin and stitch the corresponding piece to the other side of the fabric.

Test your snaps to make sure they work correctly on both sides of the reversible romper.

Final Touches and Variations

Your basic reversible romper is done! But why stop there? You can add fun touches like:

  • A cute appliqué on one side (like a fish or animal)
  • Contrasting topstitching for extra detail
  • Pockets on one or both sides
  • Different fabric combinations for holidays or seasons

The possibilities are endless, so get creative with your designs!

Frequently Asked Questions

How to make reversible clothing?

Making reversible clothing is simpler than you might think. Start by selecting two compatible fabrics. Cut identical pieces from both materials. Sew the main seams separately for each side. Then join the pieces with right sides together. Leave a small opening for turning. Flip the garment to the right side by pulling it through the opening. Finally, topstitch around all edges for a clean finish.

How to make clothes step by step?

Making clothes begins with choosing the right pattern and fabric. Take accurate measurements of the person. Pre-wash and iron your fabric. Lay out and cut your pattern pieces carefully. Pin everything in place before sewing. Start with the main seams. Add any details or embellishments. Finish with hems and closures. Press all seams for a professional look.

What is a reversible in clothing?

A reversible garment is one you can wear on either side. It shows two different looks in one piece of clothing. Think of it as getting two outfits for the price of one. Each side usually features different colors or patterns. Both sides are finished equally well. There are no exposed seams or raw edges on either side.

How to sew a reversible hem?

Sewing a reversible hem requires special attention to detail. Start by placing both fabric layers right sides together. Sew around the edge, leaving a small opening. Turn the garment right side out through this opening. Press the edges carefully with an iron. Topstitch close to the edge all around. This creates a clean finish visible from both sides. Make sure your thread color matches or complements both fabrics.

Ready to Show Off Your Creation!

Congratulations! You’ve created a beautiful, practical garment that gives your little one two outfits in one. These reversible rompers are perfect for play dates, photos, or everyday wear.

If you enjoyed making this romper, why not try making a few in different sizes so your child can wear them as they grow? These also make fantastic presents for birthdays or baby showers.
