  • Why You’ll Love This Project

Have you ever found a simple tablecloth that was almost perfect but needed a little something extra? Adding lace trim is an easy way to transform basic table linens into elegant pieces that will impress your guests. This tutorial will show you how to attach lace trim to any tablecloth, complete with neatly mitered corners for a polished, professional look. Even if you’re new to sewing, you can complete this project in just a few hours!

Why Add Lace Trim to Your Tablecloth?

A plain tablecloth can be functional, but adding lace trim instantly elevates it to something special. The delicate edge creates a classic, timeless look that works for everyday use or special occasions. Plus, this simple upgrade costs much less than buying a pre-trimmed tablecloth from a specialty store.

I recently found a beautiful Better Homes and Gardens tablecloth at Walmart for only about $15. It was a great bargain, but I knew a little lace would make it truly stand out. Let me show you how easy it is to add this elegant touch yourself.

What You’ll Need for This Project

Before starting, gather all your supplies:

MaterialsTools
TableclothSewing machine
Lace trim (enough to go around entire tablecloth)Scissors
Thread that matches your laceRuler with 45-degree angle marking
PinsIron (optional)

For my 60×120 inch tablecloth, I needed four 3-yard rolls of lace trim. The amount you’ll need depends on your tablecloth size. To calculate, measure all four sides of your tablecloth and add about 12 inches extra for corners.

Choosing the Right Lace

When picking lace trim, consider these factors:

The color should match or complement your tablecloth. I chose cream-colored lace because it matched the cream threads running through my tablecloth.

The width depends on the look you want. Wider lace makes a bolder statement, while narrower lace offers subtle elegance.

Check that the lace is machine washable if you plan to wash your tablecloth regularly.

Step-by-Step: Adding Lace Trim to Your Tablecloth

Step 1: Start Stitching the First Side

Place your tablecloth flat on your work surface. Position the lace trim along one edge, overlapping the tablecloth by about 1/4 inch. This overlap ensures the lace will be securely attached.

Start stitching about 3-4 inches from a corner. Sew along the upper section of the lace, keeping it aligned with the tablecloth edge as you go. You don’t need to pin the entire length – just align it as you stitch.

Continue stitching until you’re about 3-4 inches from the next corner, then stop.

Step 2: Prepare for the Corner

When you reach about 3-4 inches from the corner, stop stitching but leave the lace extending about 3 inches past the corner. Cut the lace at this point, leaving that 3-inch tail.

Move to the next side of the tablecloth, again leaving 3-4 inches unstitched near the corner. Position your lace along this next side with the 1/4 inch overlap and stitch down this side, stopping 3-4 inches before the next corner.

Repeat this process for all four sides of your tablecloth.

Creating Perfect Mitered Corners

The mitered corner technique gives your tablecloth a professional, tailored look. Here’s how to do it:

Step 1: Measure and Cut the First Side

At the corner, extend the lace directly outward from the edge of the tablecloth. Make sure it still overlaps the tablecloth by 1/4 inch.

Place your ruler so the 45-degree line aligns with the tablecloth edge. Position the 1/4 inch mark of your ruler at the point where the lace and tablecloth meet at the corner.

Once everything is aligned, cut the lace along the 45-degree line.

Step 2: Cut the Second Side

Repeat the same process for the lace on the adjacent side of the corner. Pull it straight out, align your ruler at a 45-degree angle, and cut.

Step 3: Join the Corner Pieces

Fold the tablecloth so the two freshly cut lace edges meet, right sides together. Pin them in place.

Before stitching, open the corner to check that everything fits correctly. The corner should lie flat without any bunching or gaps.

If the fit looks good, stitch the lace pieces together with a 1/4 inch seam allowance.

Step 4: Secure the Corner

Use a zigzag stitch along the raw edge to stop it from fraying.

Open the corner flat, pin the lace in place, and stitch it down to complete the corner.

Finishing Your Lace-Trimmed Tablecloth

After completing all four corners, finish stitching any remaining unstitched sections of lace. Give your tablecloth a final press with an iron if needed.

Now step back and admire your handiwork! Your once-ordinary tablecloth has been transformed into a special piece that looks much more expensive than it actually was.

Tips for Success

If you need to join pieces of lace along a side (rather than at corners), create a small seam of no more than 1/4 inch and zigzag stitch over the raw edge to prevent unraveling.

Take your time with the mitered corners. Measure twice, cut once is especially true here!

If you’re using patterned lace, try to match any patterns at the corners for a seamless look.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sewing Lace Trim

How do you sew lace trimming?

To sew lace trimming, start by pinning it in place on your fabric. Choose between machine topstitching or hand sewing based on your lace type. For delicate lace, use a fine needle and matching thread. Sew slowly along the edge of the lace. Remember to test on a scrap piece first.

What stitch is best for lace fabric?

A small straight stitch works best for most lace applications. Use stitch length 1.5-2.0 mm for delicate laces. For stretchy lace, try a narrow zigzag stitch. Always use a new, sharp needle sized 60/8 or 70/10. Some sewists prefer a French seam for joining lace pieces together.

How do you hem fabric lace?

Hemming lace requires gentle handling. Cut along the natural scalloped edge if possible. For straight edges, use a rolled hem foot on your machine. Another option is to fold the edge twice and hand-stitch with tiny stitches. Pressing between steps helps create a neat finish.

How do you sew lace hem tape?

Place the lace hem tape along the raw edge of your fabric. Unfold one side of the tape and pin it right sides together. Stitch in the fold line. Fold the tape to the wrong side. Press well. Finally, stitch close to the edge on the right side. This creates a clean, professional finish.

How do you tie a crop top lace?

Start by measuring the lace length needed for your body size. Cut two equal pieces for the ties. Fold each end twice and stitch to prevent fraying. Attach the ties at strategic points on the crop top. Make sure they’re securely sewn with reinforcement stitches. Test the ties before wearing to ensure they’re strong enough.

Why You’ll Love This Project

Adding lace trim to a tablecloth is satisfying for several reasons. First, it’s budget-friendly – you can create a custom, high-end looking piece for a fraction of retail cost. Second, it’s quick – even beginners can complete this project in an afternoon.

But most importantly, you’ll have created something beautiful that you can use and enjoy for years to come. Every time you set your table with your trimmed tablecloth, you’ll feel that wonderful sense of accomplishment.
