Hello, creative friends! It’s your favorite sewing expert here. Are you looking for the perfect project to build your confidence and add a beautiful new shirt to your closet? Well, you’ve found it. Today, we’re going to talk about one of my all-time favorite patterns: the dolman top.

What is a dolman top? It’s a stylish, comfortable shirt where the sleeves are part of the main body of the top. There are no tricky sleeves to set in! This makes it one of the easiest and fastest garments you can sew.

If you’ve ever felt nervous about making your own clothes, this is the project for you. We’re going to walk through everything, step by step. You’ll be shocked at how quickly you can turn a piece of fabric into a gorgeous top you’ll be proud to wear. Let’s learn how to sew a dolman top together!

Why Is This the Perfect Beginner Project?

Before we start sewing, let’s talk about why this dolman sleeve tutorial is so great for new sewers. First, the pattern is incredibly simple. Often, the front and back are the exact same pattern piece. That means less cutting and less confusion.

Second, the fit is loose and forgiving. You don’t have to worry about getting the measurements exactly perfect. The comfortable, flowy style looks great on everyone. It’s an easy sewing project that guarantees a wonderful result, which is a huge confidence booster when you’re starting out.

Gathering Your Supplies

Every great project starts with the right tools. Don’t worry, you won’t need anything fancy. Here is a simple list of what you’ll need to get started.

SupplyWhy You Need It
Dolman Top PatternThis is the blueprint for your shirt. You can find many simple patterns online.
FabricThe star of the show! Two yards should be plenty for most sizes.
Sewing MachineYour trusty sewing partner. A basic machine is all you need.
Matching ThreadChoose a thread that matches your fabric to hide your stitches.
Fabric ScissorsA good pair of scissors makes cutting your fabric easy and clean.
Pins or ClipsThese will hold your fabric pieces together while you sew.
Iron & Ironing BoardPressing your seams is the secret to a professional-looking finish.

For your fabric, I suggest starting with a knit fabric that has a little bit of stretch, like a jersey knit or a lightweight French terry. These fabrics are easy to work with and very comfortable to wear.

Step-by-Step: How to Sew a Dolman Top

Alright, are you ready to create something amazing? Let’s get to the fun part. We will go through each step slowly, so you’ll feel confident along the way.

Step 1: Prepare Your Pattern and Fabric

First, you’ll need to get your pattern ready. If you downloaded it, print it out and tape the pages together. Then, cut out the pattern piece for your size. Most patterns will have a size chart to help you choose the right one based on your body measurements.

Now, lay your fabric out flat. We need to cut two pieces: one for the front and one for the back. Your pattern will tell you to cut “on the fold.” This just means you fold your fabric in half and place the edge of the pattern piece along that fold. When you cut it out and open it up, you’ll have one full piece. Do this twice so you have two identical pieces.

Step 2: Sew the Shoulders and Sides

Place your two fabric pieces on top of each other with the “right sides” of the fabric facing each other. The right side is the pretty, printed side. Line up all the edges perfectly.

Now, pin the fabric together along the top shoulder seams and down the long side seams, which include the underarms. You will leave the neck opening, sleeve openings, and the bottom of the shirt open.

Take your pinned project to your sewing machine. Sew the shoulder and side seams using a half-inch seam allowance. A seam allowance is simply the distance from the edge of the fabric to your stitches. Remember to backstitch at the beginning and end of each seam to lock your stitches in place.

Step 3: Press Your Seams Open

This step is a game-changer! Take your top over to your ironing board. Open up the seams you just sewed and press them flat with your iron. This might seem like a small step, but it reduces bulk and makes your top look so much more professional. It also makes the next steps much easier.

Step 4: Hem the Sleeves and Bottom

Hemming just means finishing the raw edges of the fabric to give them a clean look. We’ll do this for the two sleeve openings and the bottom opening of the shirt.

The easiest way to do this is with a simple single-fold hem. Just fold the raw edge up toward the inside of the shirt by about half an inch. Press it with your iron to hold it in place. You can use pins to secure it if you like. Then, sew all the way around, close to the folded edge. Do this for both sleeves and the bottom of the shirt.

Step 5: Finish the Neckline

The neckline is the last step, and it’s what frames your face. A neat neckline makes the whole shirt look fantastic. A simple way to finish it is just like you did the hems. Carefully fold the raw edge of the neckline to the inside by about a quarter of an inch. Because the neck is curved, you’ll need to go slowly. Press it with your iron and stitch it down carefully.

For a slightly fancier look, you can use bias tape. Bias tape is a thin strip of fabric that is great for finishing curved edges. You would sew it around the neckline to create a clean and durable finish.

Choosing the Right Fabric for Your Dolman Top

The fabric you choose can completely change the look and feel of your top. A simple dolman top pattern can be made again and again with different materials for a whole new style.

Fabric TypeHow It Feels and Looks
Jersey KnitSoft, stretchy, and comfortable, just like your favorite t-shirt.
French TerryA bit thicker than jersey, it’s cozy and great for a casual, relaxed top.
Rayon or ViscoseThis fabric is very flowy and drapes beautifully. It creates an elegant, dressier look.
Textured KnitFabrics with a waffle or rib texture add fun detail and a modern touch.

Don’t be afraid to experiment! That’s the joy of sewing.

FAQs

What body type looks good in dolman sleeves?

Dolman sleeves are great for most people. They look good on almost every body type. The sleeves add a little volume on top. This can help balance wider hips. They create a soft and relaxed look. You will love how they fit.

How to sew a top step by step?

First, you cut your fabric pieces. Then, place the right sides together. Sew the shoulder and side seams. Press all your seams open with an iron. Finish by hemming the sleeves and bottom. Then hem the neckline. It is a very simple process.

How to pattern a dolman sleeve?

You can make your own pattern. Start with a basic shirt pattern. Trace it onto paper. Extend the shoulder line to create a sleeve. Then draw a new seam under the arm. This seam connects the sleeve to the bottom.

Are dolman tops flattering?

Yes, dolman tops are very flattering. They have a beautiful, flowy drape. The loose fit is comfortable and stylish. It does not cling to your body. This helps many people feel very confident.
